About

Saara Jolkkonen is a clothing & costume designer specializing in zero waste fashion design. Jolkkonen holds a masters degree from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her work revolves around developing new sustainable forms, concepts, design systems and approaches to clothing. Finding soft, poetic meaningfulness in the design process is essential to her work.

Zero waste fashion design is a design philosophy aiming to eliminate pre-consumer cut-off waste. Every inch of the fabric is being used in the design and the patterns usually look like a jigsaw puzzle. Fabric waste is a large-scale problem within the apparel industry: approximately 15% of the fabric used ends up in landfills (Rissanen, T. Zero-waste fashion design: a Study at the Intersection of Cloth, Fashion Design and Pattern Cutting 2013, p. 18). Zero waste fashion design is a systemic way to address the problem and prevent the waste creation altogether. Zero waste fashion design is a demanding, inspiring and highly creative way to design clothes.

Jolkkonen has worked for fashion companies, film and television production companies and theatre. Currently Jolkkonen works as a freelancer. Full CV available on request.
